New standards have created terrific conditions for deepening instructional practices with informational text. Yet, young readers need informational materials that are easy enough to allow them to focus on and understand the content without being overwhelmed, and challenging enough to provide just the right level of opportunity for growth in application of key reading skills and strategies. Presented by Dr. Kathy Barclay, professor emeritus of reading and early childhood at Western Illinois University and professional development manager of reading for the Superkids Reading Program.

Decodable, Complex, and Informational Text…Oh My! Text Selection & Use in the K–2 Superkids Classroom

Discover ways to meet the varied needs of the developing reader with the Superkids Reading Program, which uses a research-based, three-pronged approach to text use: (1) decodable text to build decoding automaticity; (2) teacher-supported grade-level informational text so all students have access to the same vocabulary and content; and (3) above-grade-level read-aloud text experiences to boost students' listening comprehension and vocabulary. Presented by Dr. Kathy Barclay, professor emeritus of reading and early childhood at Western Illinois University and professional development manager of reading for the Superkids Reading Program.
